The pursuit of an artistic
career was
seeded while I was quite young. I was born into a family of artists,
both visual and musical. As a young child I observed my grandfather; a
craftsman and artisan, carve wood, and paint. And later in life, I
watched my father create his paintings at our kitchen table. These
influences have encouraged my process of becoming a visual artist. And
as part of enhancing the creative spirit that lies within, I have
continued my studies in the arts at Northern Arizona University.
Along this path I have found an
affinity to what I see and appreciate, both in my own work as well as
the work of others. As a personal note in my own appreciation of art,
to see a visual creation I become critical. Does the work show a sense
of continuity, formal elements of design and composition? (i.e., form
texture, rhythm, a consistency in color relationships), not to mention
overall design. My perception of art that has integrity and value
weighs heavily on the balance of these elements.
Concepts for my creative vision are
expressed in the genre of abstract expressionism, a style that has been
inspiring and influential to my approach in painting. There are no
sketches for the work I produce. I begin with a general idea, and allow
the process of my own creative and critical thought guide a composition
that in the end will hopefully exhibit an aura of value and integrity.
Visual art has many facets, and equally artists are just as diverse in
their visual expressions. Humanistic in approach, and rooted within my
artistic-aesthetic virtues, the final composition for my work seeks to
intrigue and entice the viewer towards the contemplation of the
creative process.
