Our March Show 2015 Rick Young

SOUTHWEST PASTORAL TO OPEN AT ART EXCHANGE GALLERY Opening reception in the gallery, Saturday, March 7 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Paintings by landscape artist Rick Young will be featured in a one-man show, Southwest Pastoral, exhibited at Art Exchange Gallery in Santa Fe, March 1-31. The artist will be present at an opening reception in the gallery. Nineteen oil paintings on canvas capture the quiet beauty of the rural Southwest. A longtime Coloradoan, Young has been drawn to the canyons, mesas, hills and mountains of northern New Mexico. His colorful paintings focus not on pristine nature but on the interplay between the land and its peoples—Native American, Hispano, and Anglo. These works celebrate the simple lifestyle of those who struggle to eke a living from the land. Villages, hayfields, ranch buildings, and churches populate the landscapes in Young’s paintings. Adobe churches, testaments to the humble faith of generations of New Mexicans, anchor many of the scenes. Frequent travelers of New Mexico’s highways and back roads will recognize many of the locations spotlighted in this show: the Taos Pueblo, the Chama River, the Rio Grande and Taos gorges, the High Road between Taos and Santa Fe, and the Turquoise Trail. Other locations from Colorado and Utah may be less familiar but still distinctly Southwestern in spirit. Young’s credentials include a BFA in Art from Miami University (Ohio) and an MA in US History from the University of Colorado at Denver. Before joining Art Exchange Gallery in Santa Fe, his work was exhibited in galleries in Colorado Springs and Vail. His painterly pieces, striking for their dynamic color, have garnered awards at shows in Trinidad, CO and Castle Rock, CO. Young teaches art, history, and world religions at Daniel C. Oakes High School in Castle Rock.

Recent News

Sad news reached us here at the gallery recently.  One of my friends and fellow artists, Joseph Sparaco died of a brain tumor.  He was best known for his Hudson river style paintings of Western Massachusetts and locations back east.  We mourn the loss of Joe and his enormous talent.  Here is an example of the work that we still have in our collection at Art Exchange Gallery. sparacoveil2 “Veil Over my family Home”, Oil on canvas, 20″x36″

Bill Baker

As highly talented and professional that Bill Baker is, his paintings take on added meaning above and beyond just the images you see before you. Bill has traveled the world recording many native civilizations first hand and transforms his experiences into amazing works of fine art. Early impressionism, balancing complementary shapes with harmonious color, invoking dramatic feeling while representing a style truly all his own. “To me, contact with life is most important. I feel God has given me a gift and I want to use it to bring glory to His name. I express diversity in which people live on this planet and to live with them is to know them with insight and integrity.” “A work has a power of its own. I want to spark the viewers’ emotions while entertaining their eye.” Baker lives with the people he paints, experiencing every aspect of their culture, of which some are about to become extinct. His travels have also included much of Asia, adding to the entourage of cultures he has experienced. His subjects include the Thrahumara. Indians of the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico, the Guatemalan Maya Quicha Indians, the hills tribes of East Asia, and many primitive Indian tribes in the Amazon of South America. “These paintings are my poetry, as music is to the ear, so form and color are to the eye. I carefully design and orchestrate a symphony of strokes and color, the drama of light hitting form.” Baker just recently started showing his works with startling results such as winning awards at national shows, winning best of show, one man exhibitions, featured in International Artist and Southwest Art magazines as well as accepted into the collection at the Albuquerque International airport with a work entitled, “Waiting at Norogachi.” Bill Baker is coordinator of Roadrunner World Missions, a non-profit Christian Ministry that proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost and aids in the endless need of so many worldwide. Roadrunner is establishing an orphanage to feed, educate and provide a home for so many needy children in India. Proceeds from the sale of Bakers paintings will fund this mission work worldwide.
